Iglesias\u00a0<em>et al.<\/em> (2014)<\/p>\n<p>Read the article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/gim\/journal\/vaop\/ncurrent\/abs\/gim201458a.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In this study, 115 people (mostly children, but some adults) were evaluated at Columbia University Medical Center and were tested using whole-exome sequencing to identify the causes of many different health problems (for example, birth defects, developmental delay, seizures, hearing loss, behavioral differences, heart problems).\u00a0Diagnoses were made in 37 cases (32.2%), including\u00a0<strong>one\u00a0<\/strong>participant who had a change in the\u00a0<em>DYRK1A\u00a0<\/em>gene not inherited from either parent (de novo).\u00a0Changes in this gene have been associated with intellectual disability in the past, and this patient also had features of a smaller-than-average head size (microcephaly), small size during pregnancy (<em>intrauterine growth retardation<\/em>), subtle differences in facial features\u00a0<em>like long eyelashes and anteriorly rotated ears<\/em>, as well as developmental delay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The usefulness of whole-exome sequencing in routine clinical practice Original research article by A.
