We do this by supporting the work that advances the frontiers of research in math and the basic sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Foundation<\/span> provides funding for autism and neurodevelopmental research through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/\"><span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Foundation<\/span> Autism Research Initiative (SFARI)<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. SFARI&#8217;s mission is to improve the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders by funding innovative research of the highest quality and relevance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> is a project supported by the <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Foundation<\/span>, through the <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Foundation<\/span> Autism Research Initiative (SFARI).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This short video below explains the grantmaking and other research programs within SFARI, including <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span>. We aim to collect information from participants to better understand the life course of these individuals. This is a \u201cgenes first\u201d cohort. Notably, only about 1 in 3 registrants have a formal diagnosis of autism. The list of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonssearchlight.org\/research\/what-we-study\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">genetic conditions<\/span><\/a> that we study continues to grow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/spark\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"notranslate\">SPARK<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Foundation<\/span> Powering Autism Research<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span class=\"notranslate\">SPARK<\/span> recruits and engages a community of people with autism and their families that live in the United States to participate in research studies. We collaborate with 31 university-affiliated autism centers across the country. Some people who receive a genetic diagnosis from <span class=\"notranslate\">SPARK<\/span> will be invited to participate in <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> to continue their research journey. <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.sparkforautism.org\/simons-searchlight\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about how this process works.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/autism-brainnet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Autism BrainNet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism BrainNet is our biorepository of postmortem brain tissue made possible through a collaborative network of academic sites that collect, store, and distribute brain tissue. <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> and Autism BrainNet share data to make research easier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>SFARI Research Resources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of early 2022, SFARI has contributed to over 1,700 research publications, provided research funding to more than 360 investigators in the United States and abroad, and had 411 researchers or companies access SFARI cohort data or biospecimens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/funding-opportunities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">funding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for researchers around the world to support studies that are relevant to our mission. Any researchers studying one of <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span>\u2019s genetic conditions may apply. Below are more SFARI research resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/ips-cells\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iPSCs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We use blood sample donations from some of our <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> participants to create a type of stem cells called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/ips-cells\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iPSCs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All iPSCs are available for distribution to approved researchers through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/sfari-base\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI Base<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This program allows researchers to study human disease in a lab setting to help develop personalized medicines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/base.sfari.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI Base<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI Base is the portal to access data and biospecimens, such as tissue, blood, and plasma, from SFARI research initiatives. SFARI Base is an online portal for submitting research requests. All data and information in SFARI Base advances research and is readily available for low or no cost to all external researchers and biotech or pharmaceutical companies. <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> data are available through SFARI Base.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/2021\/02\/02\/simons-searchlight-research-matching-program-launched\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Match<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research Match is a program designed for researchers to recruit people enrolled in <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> or <span class=\"notranslate\">SPARK<\/span> into new research studies. It is free of charge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gene.sfari.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI Gene<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SFARI Gene is an open access database that provides the most up-to-date information on all known human genes that are linked to autism spectrum disorders. You can use this database to track the latest findings on genetic risk factors linked to autism and check out individual <span class=\"notranslate\">Simons Searchlight<\/span> genes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Model Organism Repository<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through SFARI funding, researchers have access to model organisms, specifically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/mouse-models\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/rat-models\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfari.org\/resource\/zebrafish-models\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zebrafish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Simons Foundation is a private foundation that advances research in several different fields.
